How to install a Luxury Vinyl Flooring (Without glue)

Considering installing a Quick-Step Luxury Vinyl floor (LIVYN) covering yourself, well luckily help is at hand..If you don’t want the hassle and mess of using adhesive LIVYN can be installed using the easier floating installation method..

In the video below you will see a Quick-Step academy trainer show how to carry out a floating installation of Luxury Vinyl Flooring. The video includes :

  • A brief introduction – Explaining how the LIVYN flooring works as a floating floor
  • Important advice on acclimatisation – Including how to position the Luxury Vinyl flooring, for how long and at what temperature
  • How to check the sub-floor before you start for evenness and guidance on how to rectify any discrepancies
  • How to install the underlay required for such an installation – Please note, this section of the video advises to remove your skirting boards prior to the installation. However, this is not essential if you are not in a position to do so and a colour matched (to your skirting boards i.e. white) expansion beading can be used
  • Guidance on the ideal direction your new flooring should be installed
  • Guidance on how the LIVYN flooring panels can be installed in several ways
  • How to start the installation of the panels
  • Guidance on the correct expansion (as worded in the video ‘dilation’) gap to allow for the panels to breathe
  • The main body of the installation
  • What to do after the new LIVYN flooring has been installed
  • Finally guidance on maintenance

    Dear there,
I would like to install this flooring in my bathroom on top of chipboard.
The area is less than 2m by 2m and I was wondering if I could install the underlay directly onto the chipboard and then the vinyl.
I have seen advice to use plywood but the room is so small that I do not think I will get much deflation from the chipboard.
    Thank you for any advice.

  • Hi Frederic,

Providing the chipboard is flat, the surface is smooth, and you’ll be using a click vinyl (obvious statement), you’ll be fine going straight over the chipboard.

    Regards,

    Wes.

    Hi Wes,
Thank you so much for your reply.
Could you please confirm whether I need to use an underlay or not, as your response seems to suggest that I do not?
    Regards

  • Hi Frederic,

Yes. For a ‘click’ vinyl, it’s recommended you use a semi-adhesive underlay (They’re typically 1.6 mm thick with a peel back foil). Although, do read the installation instructions of your particular vinyl for clarification.

    Regards,

    Wes.
